A residential proxy routes your traffic through a real home broadband connection, so the target site sees an IP address assigned by an ISP to an ordinary household rather than an IP owned by a data center. IPLight operates a dynamic residential pool aggregated from multiple residential network providers, with country, state and city targeting, per-request rotation or sticky sessions, billed by the gigabyte you actually use.
What makes residential IPs different
Every IP address belongs to an autonomous system. Data-center ranges are registered to hosting providers: the ranges are public, and the same subnets are shared by thousands of crawlers and scanners, so a risk engine can classify them as automation from the ASN alone.
Residential IPs are registered to telecom carriers, cable operators and fiber providers. They sit on real subscriber lines in real neighborhoods. Combined with a large pool and low reuse per IP, requests look like ordinary browsing, which is why residential proxies remain the default choice for e-commerce, social platforms, search engines and travel sites that score traffic aggressively.
How dynamic residential proxies work
You can generate credentials in the console or pull them through the API. The connection string is the standard host:port:username:password, with targeting and session parameters embedded in the username:
# Sticky session: US / New York, same IP for 30 minutes host:1337:account-country-us-state-ny-city-newyork-sid-AbCdEfGhIjKl-stime-30:password # Rotating: UK, new IP on every request host:1337:account-country-gb-sid-AbCdEfGhIjKl:password
Rotating mode is built for high-volume crawling: one IP per request keeps the request count per IP close to zero. Sticky mode is for flows that need continuity such as log in, paginate, add to cart or fill a form. Sticky windows run from 1 to 120 minutes; when the window expires the IP rotates automatically, so rebuild the session before it expires if you need longer continuity.

Common use cases
Price monitoring
Scrape Amazon, eBay and Shopify from local city perspectives to capture real prices, stock and promotions.
SERP and SEO tracking
See search results as users in other regions do, without personalization polluting the data.
Ad verification
Check impressions, landing pages and creative substitutions from the actual target market.
Social media accounts
Give each account its own residential exit so platforms do not link them by shared IP.
Travel and ticketing
Compare flight, hotel and rental prices by origin to avoid geo-based pricing.
Marketplace isolation
Pair with an antidetect browser to keep each store on a stable, separate exit.
Residential vs datacenter vs mobile
| Dimension | Dynamic residential | Static residential (ISP) | Datacenter | Mobile |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IP owner | Home broadband carrier | Home broadband carrier | IDC / hosting | 4G / 5G carrier |
| Detection risk | Low | Low | High | Lowest |
| Speed | Medium | High | High | Medium |
| IP stability | Rotates per session | Fixed for the term | Fixed | Rotates per session |
| Pricing | From $1/GB | From $3/IP/month | From $1/GB | Per GB |
| Best for | Scraping, pricing, verification | Accounts, stores, whitelists | High volume, low-friction targets | Mobile apps, social |
Rule of thumb: the stricter the target's risk engine, the more you should lean on residential IPs; the more you need one stable identity over time, the more you should use static residential; if throughput is all that matters and the target does not score IP reputation, datacenter is the cheapest option.
Pricing
Getting started in five steps
- Sign in and open Proxy → Dynamic Residential in the console.
- Pick country, state and city, choose sticky or rotating, choose protocol and output format.
- Set the quantity and generate credentials, then copy or export them.
- Drop them into your scraper, antidetect browser or mobile client.
- Track usage in the console and top up traffic as needed.
# Verify the exit IP with curl
curl -x "http://account-country-us-sid-AbCdEfGhIjKl-stime-30:password@host:port" https://httpbin.org/ip
# Python requests, rotating per request
import requests
proxy = "http://account-country-gb-sid-ZzYyXxWwVvUu:password@host:port"
r = requests.get("https://httpbin.org/ip",
proxies={"http": proxy, "https": proxy}, timeout=30)
print(r.json())
Puppeteer, Playwright, Selenium and Scrapy work the same way through --proxy-server or the proxies argument. The exact gateway host and port are shown in the console; see the dynamic proxy guide for every parameter.
FAQ
What is a residential proxy?
A residential proxy routes your request through a real home internet connection, so the destination site sees a residential IP assigned by an ISP instead of a data-center IP. IPLight's dynamic residential pool covers 200+ countries and regions with country, state and city level targeting.
How is it different from a datacenter proxy?
Datacenter IPs belong to IDC networks: the ASN is public, the ranges are known, and many automated clients share the same subnets, so risk engines flag them quickly. Residential IPs belong to telecom and broadband carriers and are spread across real households, which makes automated traffic look like normal visitors.
How often does the IP change?
Two modes. Rotating: a new IP for every request. Sticky: the same IP for a session you define, from 1 to 120 minutes, then it rotates automatically. You control the session with the sid parameter.
Can I target a specific city?
Yes. Use country, state and city codes in the username. Leaving country empty gives you global mix mode, where IPs are assigned randomly across the pool.
How is traffic billed?
Per gigabyte, counting both upload and download, with 1 GB = 1000 MB. From $1/GB with volume tiers at 100 GB, 1 TB, 5 TB and 10 TB. You can watch daily usage in the console.
Why does my connection fail?
Check four things: your client must run from an overseas network; the gateway host and port must match what the console generated; the country, sid and stime values must be spelled exactly (case sensitive); and the account must have remaining traffic and an active term.
Can I use one account on several machines at once?
Yes. Credentials are not bound to a device, so multiple machines and threads can share the same account. Cost depends only on traffic consumed.
What if success rates drop on a strict target?
Lower the per-IP request rate and rotate the sid to get a fresh exit, make sure headers, cookies and browser fingerprint are consistent, and add retry with backoff for batch jobs. If it persists, open a ticket and we will help profile the target's defenses.
